The Royal College of Radiologists is the professional body responsible for the speciality of clinical oncology and clinical radiology throughout the United Kingdom. Its role is to advance the science and practice of radiology and oncology, further public education and set appropriate professional standards of practice. The College also sets and monitors the educational curriculum for those training to enter the profession.
Doctors were well represented in this, the world’s first X-ray association. About 100 radiologists met in 1934 to establish a new society known as The British Association of Radiologists to meet the clear need for a medical radiology institution. The Society of Radiotherapists of Great Britain and Ireland was set up for those specialising in cancer treatment by X-rays and radium. In 1939, the two bodies amalgamated as The Faculty of Radiologists.
