Buryat State University, named after Dorzhi Banzarov (BSU), traces its origins back to February 10, 1932. The university was officially established on September 30, 1995, following the Decree of the Council of People’s Commissars of the RSFSR. The Buryat-Mongolian Agro-Pedagogical Institute, located in the city of Verkhneudinsk, formed the foundation for this newly created university. M.P. Khabaev was appointed as the director of the university.
On its 25th anniversary in 1957, Buryat State University received the Certificate of Honor from the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Buryat-Mongolian ASSR. In 1979, the Ministry of Education of the RSFSR officially designated BSPI as a higher education institution, acknowledging the notable achievements of its teaching staff.
