It was originally started as a technical school in 1922 and became an independent public university in 1970. Today, Makerere University has nine schools and offers programs to about 36,000 undergraduate students and 4,000 postgraduate students. It became a key centre for higher education in East Africa in 1935 and started offering post-school certificate courses in 1937 as it transitioned into a full university.
