Makerere University Uganda, the largest and oldest institution of higher learning, was initially founded as a technical school in 1922. It gained status as an independent public university in 1970. Presently, Makerere University comprises nine schools and one offering programs to approximately 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. Its growth led it to become a Center for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935. Subsequently, in 1937, the College began transitioning into an institution of higher education, introducing post-school certificate courses.
